What do water damage categories mean?

Restoration crews sort water into three categories by how clean it is. The category decides how much has to be thrown away and how the area is cleaned. It can also change over time, because clean water left sitting for a few days becomes contaminated.

  • Category 1, clean water. From a supply line, faucet or water heater. Many materials can be dried and kept.
  • Category 2, gray water. From a washing machine, dishwasher or AC drain line. It may hold soap, food or bacteria.
  • Category 3, black water. Sewage, outside floodwater and water that has sat for days. Carpet, pad and soaked drywall are usually removed.

What do water damage classes mean?

Class describes how much water there is and how hard it will be to dry, separate from how dirty it is. A higher class means more evaporation is needed, so more equipment and more drying days.

  • Class 1. A small area with little water absorbed, like part of one room with a tile floor.
  • Class 2. A whole room or more, with water wicked into carpet and up to about 2 feet into walls.
  • Class 3. Water came from above and soaked ceilings, walls, insulation and carpet.
  • Class 4. Dense materials like hardwood, concrete, plaster or stone are wet and need specialty drying.
